Ilhan Omar Calls for Disbanding of Minneapolis Police

Far-left Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar called for the disbanding of the Minneapolis Police Department in the wake of George Floyd's death.

"The Minneapolis Police Department has proven themselves beyond reform. It’s time to disband them and reimagine public safety in Minneapolis. Thank you to @Mplsward3 for your leadership on this!"

Omar tagged Steve Fletcher, a member of the Minneapolis City Council in her tweet, who has managed to rally other council members to support disbanding the police.

The push to defund the police has been taking off among those on the left, and several major celebrities have signed a letter demanding it.

The calls for defunding the police began in connection with mass riots and protests following the death of George Floyd.

Earlier this week Fletcher said, "Several of us on the council are working on finding out, what it would take to disband the MPD and start fresh with a community-oriented, non-violent public safety and outreach capacity."

“The whole world is watching, and we can declare policing as we know it a thing of the past, and create a compassionate, non-violent future,” he added. “It will be hard. But so is managing a dysfunctional relationship with an unaccountable armed force in our city.”

Several other organizations across Minnesota have already announced they will no longer work with the police department.

Across the country in California, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti is also going after the police force and announced that he is planning on defunding the LAPD by $100-$150 million.

The announcement makes absolutely no sense considering violent riots broke out in LA county last week, resulting in millions of dollars of damages. Now, LA's mayor wants there to be an even weaker police presence.
